Cedar City Half Marathon

This year’s Cedar City Half Marathon is coming on Saturday, September 9, 2017. This highly anticipated annual event brings in local runners and travelers alike to run down the Cedar Canyon as summer winds to an end. This closed-canyon, downhill race is perfect for those training for full marathons in following weeks. The 13.1 mile race starts at 7 am for those participating to run during the cooler parts of the day, with crisp mountain morning air. This scenic route has the beauty of Southern Utah at an elevation of 8400 ft, traversing the canyons steep grades framed with green alpine forests and white sandstone cliffs framing the route. The race ends at the Cedar City Main Street Park at an elevation of 5300 ft, making this downhill race have an elevation spread of 3000 ft. For those looking to train in high-altitudes, this race is great for high-altitude training.

On the morning of, runners will be transported by shuttle to the base of Cedar Breaks National Monument at Woods Ranch. The trail transitions from Highway 14 to the Coal Creek Trail system, running along the creek until the end of the race. Aid stations with water, Powerade, and supplies for blisters are every 2 miles along the trail. Runners can leave bags and belongings at the start of the trail on a designated truck, where it will be escorted down by the time runners finish the race. It is advised to avoid putting valuable belongings in their bags. Bus loading will be at Bicentennial Park, next to the finish line by the soccer fields, and will take the runners up Cedar Canyon to the Start Line near Woods Ranch. Clothing Bag Pickup will be near the finish line by the refreshments and award stand areas.

St. George Marathon

This year is the 40th anniversary of the St. George Marathon on Saturday, October 7th, 2017. This marathon brings in runners from all over the nation and celebrates the title of the 13th largest marathon in the United States. The marathon begins in Pine Valley Mountains and ends in the Vernon Worthen Park in the city of St. George. While temperatures are cooler in the morning, by the end of the day, temperatures can range from 65-85 degrees. Runners have 6 hours to finish the race, and many use this as a qualifier for Boston Marathon. While the race accommodates 7,400 runners, applicants are chosen by a lottery system.
